What is Headlight Restoration?

Headlight restoration is a process designed to bring back the clarity and functionality of your vehicle’s headlights.

Over time, headlights can become cloudy, foggy, or yellowed due to constant exposure to harsh weather conditions, UV rays, and road debris. This deterioration can impact nighttime visibility and pose a safety risk for other drivers.

The restoration process involves removing the damaged layer of the plastic lens, polishing the surface to restore its clarity, and applying a protective coating to guard against future damage.

Headlight restoration keeps your headlights clear and bright and enhances your safety on the road.

How It Works

The headlight restoration process is thorough and involves several key steps to ensure your headlights are as clear and bright as possible:

1. Pre-cleaning:

The headlight is initially cleaned to remove any surface dirt, dust, or debris.

2. Masking:

The areas surrounding the headlight are masked off to protect them from damage during the restoration process.

3. Sanding:

The damaged layer of the plastic lens is carefully sanded away to remove the cloudy or yellowed surface.

4. Polishing:

The headlight surface is then polished to restore its clarity and shine.

5. Protective Coating:

Finally, a protective coating is applied to shield the headlights from future damage caused by UV rays and road debris.

Headlight Restoration FAQs

Headlights go bad from too much exposure to UV rays from the sun or water. They get foggy on the outside, or get a crack, and get condensation on the inside.
Yes. But once the inside is compromised, I do not recommend restoration, I recommend replacement. On the outside, 98% of the time we can improve them 75-100%
90% of the headlights we see the problems on the outside.

Yes, it can be repaired. Unfortunately in most cases repairing the interior of a headlight can be almost as expensive as replacing them.

At Splash, we recommend replacing a headlight that has interior headlight damage instead of restoring it.

Several years, unless exposed to the same abuse that caused the problem in the first place. Can I prevent it from happening? If garaged, yes. If not, change the parking orientation as it relates to the sun!
Headlights get foggy primarily from being left out in the sun. The sun wreaks havoc on your car.
If you store your car in a garage or use a cover to keep it out of direct sunlight, your headlights will last for years before they need restoration or replacement.

Likely not. If you have cloudy headlights, chances are your car has been left out during the day in the sun in a parking lot or your driveway for extensive period times days after days on end.

If your vehicle is more than five years old, it may start to show some signs. We find most vehicles between eight and 12 years old and older are likely in need of some headlight restoration.

Reason 1: Many times people will bring in vehicles that they’re handing down to their children or nieces or nephews or even grandchildren

Most folks in this case will try and do some type of detail to clean up the car for the kid.

The problem is most of the time they don’t wanna spend too much money on these details because the car is going to a kid who’s probably going to abuse the car.

But by giving the kid the car and having a cleaned up, we’re giving a benchmark for the child to learn how to take care of the car.
In the haste to give the child a car, I’ve been known to tell my customer I will not clean that car for that kid unless they restore the headlights.

Sometimes my customers will get adamant that they really don’t want to spend the money for that. My problem is that a kid who’s new to nighttime driving is in danger with 40% or 60% or 80% occluded headlights.

Reason 2: At Splash, we do a lot of of sale prep cars

These cars are often 5 to 15 years old, perfect targets of cars, whose headlights have started to go bad.

Want to consumer is looking at purchasing your car, if it has foggy headlights, they are likely to offer less for that vehicle, thinking they have to replace the headlights.

Some of those kits will create a temporary cleansing of the headlight and leave you a clear lens, but you must be aware the longevity is not good.

In fact, we’ve seen people make their headlights worse using those kits instead of better if uses improperly.

It can, but it’s not a long-term solution. And people that don’t know what they’re doing can make the headlight worse.
